ACADEMIC YEAR  : SPRING  2008-2009

COURSE TITLE       : TINS 304 Theories of Translation

INSTRUCTOR          :  Prof.Dr.Aysu ERDEN

 

 

AIMS AND DESCRIPTION

 

A  survey of translation theories from their origins to the present. Emphasis will be put on contemporary theories: their role and function in translating, translation criticism and translator-training. As the main objective of this course is to assist students in discovering how theory relates to practice in the field of translation, an introduction to modern translation theories; discussions on language, philosophy,  translation through cultural paradigms will be given.. Source-based and target-based theories of translation will be examined, using a variety of text categories. Reference to linguistics, equivalence, similarity, analogy, correspondance, matching, functionalism, syntax and pragmatics will be given. Critical engagement with theoretical concepts and the cosideration of their practical application to a variety of literary texts will be encouraged. The students will be expected to be able to develop a critical outlook on theories of translation and translation criticism; to acquire a deeper insight into the process and product of translation. Thus, they will become acquainted with the key elements of linguistic theory, as it relates to the activity of translation itself. The breadth and depth of students' methodological resources will be enhanced. An ample translation practice to improve their skills in interpreting linguistic and cross-cultural complexities in the source texts, and in reconstructing them in the target texts will be made.

 

THE  COURSE  WILL  COVER  THE  FOLLOWING  TOPICS

 

-         Linguistic Approach and Translation Studies

-         The discussion of the concepts of equivalence, similarity, analogy, orrespondance, matching in translation

-         Pragmatic analysis in translation

-         The socio-literary status of translation

-         Stylistic approaches to translation-Translation of style

-         Polysystem theory

-         Descriptive Translation Studies

-         Russian Formalism and Translation Studies

-         Shift of Expression

-         Translation as a Critical Interpretation

-         Target Oriented Approach

-         The discussion of A Skopos Theory of Translation

-         Literary Genres and Translation

 

TRANSLATION  PRACTICE

 

1-      The concept of translation: Discussions on language, structure, style, meaning, communication, cultural factors

2-      Discussions on the translation of the texts

3-      Discussions on the overall difficulties in translation

4-      Translation of the texts from English into Turkish

5-       Translation of the texts from Turkish into English

6-       Translation criticism: The students will be expected to attain the talent of solving the problems that the translator confronts within the framework of translation criticism; to answer the questions on whether the solutions are correct or not and also if they are acceptable from the viewpoint of translation studies. Critical interest in published translations of various  literary texts will be developed.

7-      Literary Translation: Students will study and analyse literary texts and genres   for the purpose of translating them within the framework of the principles of  literary translation. Analysis of literary discourse with a view to devising  strategies for the translation of a wide variety of  texts will be made. Special  emphasis will be  put on  fiction and  poetry. Application of strategies  through practice will be made.

 

COURSE  REQUIREMENTS

Punctuality and attendence are expected and each student will have to turn at least one assignement  for  which s/he is to talk to the instructor to be approved

-         written papers

-         the preparation of the pre-assigned essays / chapters for class discussions and the active participation

-         present extra readings in the classroom participate in the discussions

 

GRADING

Two mid-term  exams  :   15% + 15% = 30 %

Final exam                   :   30 %

Active participation     :   10 %

Assignements              :   20 %

      Term paper                  :   10 %
